Post-Op General Instructions
It is important to remember that specific post-operative instructions will be given to you that pertain to your particular procedure. If you have any questions, call our office for clarification.
MEDICATION OVERVIEW
Pre-operative medications may be given to you depending on your particular procedure. Be sure to take them according to the instructions given to you by our surgeon or staff.
SMOKING
As with any surgical procedure, oral surgery can be hindered by smoking or tobacco use. For complex bone grafting, a complication rate of up to 50% is reported in smokers.
SWELLING
Swelling is often associated with oral surgery. It can be minimized by using a cold pack for the first 48 hours placed on the cheek adjacent to the surgical area. This should be applied 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off during the first 48 hours after surgery. After 48 hours place a warm compress on the skin. Heat increases blood flow to help resolve swelling.
PAIN
Unfortunately, most oral surgery is accompanied by some degree of discomfort. Take the first pill before the local anesthetic has worn off, you should be able to manage any discomfort better. Take your pain medication with food. If you do not achieve adequate relief at first, you may supplement each pain pill with an analgesic such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
DIET
Depending on your particular procedure, there may be diet limitations. Please follow the instructions given to you based on the specific procedure.
For implants and bone graft cases, do not chew in the area of the implant and/or bone graft. Mobility on the implant or bone graft can result in a failed result.
WOUND CARE
You will be given specific instructions on wound care as they apply to your procedure.
We want your recover to be as smooth and pleasant as possible. Following these instructions will help your recovery, but if you have any questions about your progress, please feel free to call the office to speak with one of us.
